A referendum on a proposal to amend the Constitution to allow Ireland to ratify the Lisbon Treaty was held on 12 June 2008.

The Treaty proposed to amend, but not replace, the two main treaties which govern the EU, namely:

  • the Treaty Establishing the European Community (the EC Treaty);
  • the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht Treaty).

The Treaty would also change the name of the EC Treaty to the "Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union".

The changes proposed in the Treaty could be divided into two main areas:

  • changes to how the EU is governed
  • changes which affect a range of EU activities.

The proposal was not approved by the people.
