The Referendum Commission is an independent body whose role is to provide unbiased and independent information on the referendums which will take place on Friday 4 October.
- One of those referendums asks do you agree to the abolition of Seanad Éireann.
- The other asks do you agree to the establishment of a Court of Appeal and other changes to the Courts system.
The Commission is an independent body. Under the 1998 Referendum Act the Government may set up a Commission in relation to any referendum. The Chairperson of this Commission is Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne. The other members are: Mr Kieran Coughlan, former Clerk of Dáil Éireann; Ms Deirdre Lane, Clerk of Seanad Éireann; Mr Seamus McCarthy, Comptroller & Auditor General and Ms Emily O’Reilly, Ombudsman.
We do not argue for a yes or no vote. We simply set out the facts about what is being proposed and encourage people to vote. We do that through publishing this website, delivering a Guide to the referendums to every home in the country, running a substantial advertising campaign to draw attention to the referendums and engaging with the media during the campaign.
Detailed explanations of the referendum proposals, as well as some useful background information, is available elsewhere on this website.
